2024 Annual Student Competition

Calling all students!

Register for the 2024 Chicago Flute Club Annual Student Competition.

The Chicago Flute Club is excited to announce the 2024 Annual Student Competition. The competition will take place in person on November 17, 2024, at Harper College. Please note that the regulations now specify only one pre-selected piece per division, requiring students to choose a second piece of their choice to complete their competition program. The competition will take place in a single round, and judges will award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place plus two honorable mention winners in each division. Results will be announced via email by November 18th.

Registration will be open from September 1 through October 20, 2024 via the Registration button on this page. Performance times will be assigned prior to the competition. Please notify the competition chair as soon as possible if you need to request a specific time frame for your performance; accommodations cannot be guaranteed but will be granted on a case-by-case basis. 

Eligibility

1. Both, the student and the student’s teacher must be current members of the Chicago Flute Club.  Membership dues are $30 for a Student Membership and $45 for a Regular Membership. New members who join during the summer prior to the beginning of the 2024-25 membership year on September 1 will have their memberships extended until September 1, 2025. 2. Both membership and competition registrations must be made under the full name and e-mail address of the student, not the parent. The guardian/parent will be able to include their e-mail address in the registration form in order to receive all e-mails from the Chicago Flute Club.
   
   
3. For the 2024-2025 school year, the student must be in 12th grade or under to register for the Senior Division, 9th grade or under for Junior Division, and 6th grade or under for Elementary Division.
   
4. Previous first prize winners are not eligible to compete in the same division again.

Competition Rules

1. Registration for the 2024 Chicago Flute Club Annual Student Competition must be submitted online by 11:59 pm on October 20, 2024.
2. A competition registration fee of $25 must be paid online on the Chicago Flute Club website.
3. The competition will be limited to the first 30 registrants in the Elementary Division and 45 in each the Junior and Senior Divisions.
4. Those candidates who decide not to compete should notify chairs, Vanessa Lopez and Christiana Ostoich at studentcomp@chicagofluteclub.org  by November 10th, 2024 to withdraw their registration. The registration fee will not be refunded.
5. If a candidate wishes to perform the repertoire from a higher division, they must compete ONLY in that advanced division.
6. The decision of the judges is final.
   
   

Repertoire Rules

1. There is no memorization requirement in any division.
2. It is recommended to use the edition specified below. Click link where provided.
3. Piano accompaniment is mandatory for all required repertoire, as well as for all choice pieces as indicated by the composer. The CFC will provide a list of pianists who have made themselves available for the November 17 competition date. Rehearsal scheduling as well as any fees associated with the rehearsals and performance will be the responsibility of the contestants. Contact information will be sent to the registrants after the registration.
4. Each contestant must perform the required piece followed by one piece of their choice. Please adhere to the time limit. Cuts are allowed in the choice piece. Multiple movements are allowed if they are from the same piece. Judges may stop any performance that exceeds the time limit.

JUNIOR DIVISION (9th grade and under)
