The Chicago Flute Club is excited to announce the 2027 Annual Student Competition. The competition will take place in person on April 11, 2027, at Elmhurst University. Please note that the regulations now specify only one pre-selected piece per division, requiring students to select a second piece of their choosing to complete their competition program. The competition will take place in a single round, and judges will award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place plus honorable mention winners in each division. Results will be announced via email by April 12th.

Registration will be open from February 15 through March 15, 2027, via the Registration button on this page. Performance times will be assigned prior to the competition. Please notify the competition chair as soon as possible if you need to request a specific time frame for your performance; accommodations cannot be guaranteed, but will be granted on a case-by-case basis.

 

Eligibility

  • Both the student and the student’s teacher must be current members of the Chicago Flute Club. Membership dues are $35 for a Student Membership and $50 for a Regular Membership. Our membership year runs from July 1 to June 30. Check here to see the benefits of becoming a Chicago Flute Club member.
  • Both membership and competition registrations must be made under the full name and e-mail address of the student, not the parent. The guardian/parent will be able to include their e-mail address in the registration form in order to receive all e-mails from the Chicago Flute Club.
  • For the 2026-2027 school year, the student must be in 12th grade or under to register for the Senior Division, 9th grade or under for Junior Division, and 6th grade or under for Elementary Division.
  • Previous first-prize winners are not eligible to compete in the same division again.

 

Competition Rules

  • Registration for the 2027 Chicago Flute Club Annual Student Competition must be submitted online by 11:59 pm on March 15, 2027.
  • A competition registration fee of $25 must be paid online on the Chicago Flute Club website.
  • The competition will be limited to the first 30 registrants in the Elementary Division and 45 in each the Junior and Senior Divisions.
  • Those candidates who decide not to compete should notify the chair, Raimundo Pineda, at studentcomp@chicagofluteclub.org by April 5, 2027, to withdraw their registration. The registration fee will not be refunded.
  • If a candidate wishes to perform the repertoire from a higher division, they must compete ONLY in that advanced division.
  • Scores: Please bring two copies of the score for your chosen piece with you for the judges. You do not need to bring a copy of the required piece; we will provide that for the judges.
  • The decision of the judges is final.

 

Repertoire Rules

  • There is no memorization requirement in any division.
  • It is recommended to use the edition specified below. Click the link where provided.
  • Piano accompaniment is mandatory for all required repertoire, as well as for all choice pieces as indicated by the composer. The CFC has provided a list of pianists whom you can reach out to and possibly hire for the competition. Rehearsal scheduling as well as any fees associated with the rehearsals and performance will be the sole responsibility of the contestants.
  • Each contestant must perform the required piece followed by one piece of their choice. Please adhere to the time limit. Cuts are allowed in the choice piece. Multiple movements are allowed if they are from the same piece. Judges may stop any performance that exceeds the time limit.

JUNIOR DIVISION (9th grade and under)

Special Note: The flutetunes.net edition is missing the following markings that should be added:

m. 37, slur G# to F#
m. 39, slur last three eighth notes
m. 40, a tempo
m. 41, slur last two notes

  • One piece of your choice (8-minute time limit)

 

SENIOR DIVISION (12th grade and under)
