      • Notification of Finalists: Tuesday, December 1, 2026

The Kujala International Piccolo Competition is held biennially.

 

Eligibility

  • The 2027 Kujala International Piccolo Competition is open to all flutists aged 18 years or older from any geographical region.

  • Chicago Flute Club membership is NOT required for application.

  • Previous first prize winners, high school students, and current students of the final round judges (TBA) are ineligible.

 

Competition Rules

  • The application must include the YouTube link (video performance of the Preliminary Round required repertoire) and be submitted by Nov 15, 2026.

  • The application fee is $45, which is non-refundable.

  • The video must be uploaded to YouTube and set as unlisted and named with the last and first names of the candidate, followed by the round. For instance, UNDERWOOD_Susan_Preliminary_Round.

  • 4-5 Candidates will be notified of their status by Dec.1st, 2026.

  • The final Round will take place online on Feb 20, 2027 Time 1 pm (Central Time Zone). The final recordings will be due Feb. 7, 2027

  • All judges’ decisions are final.

 

This competition is entirely virtual. No in-person portion will take place.

 

Repertoire (no repeats are to be taken in the recordings)

Preliminary Round:

Candidates must submit an unedited YouTube video performance of the preliminary round for adjudication containing these pieces and in this order.

  • Tango Etude No. 3 by Astor Piazzolla (Edition Henry Lemoine)

Notes:

    • 8va for measures 28 and 29, as well as for measures 88 and 89.
    • 8va for the grace notes on low C in measures 12 and 72.
    • 8va for C in measure 57.

Final Round:

Finalists will record and submit an unedited YouTube video performance of a recital program 20 minutes in length (including time between movements and works).

    • All finalists must perform the required work:

    • The remainder of the program is to be freely chosen by the performer but is limited to works originally written for the piccolo, or works considered to be part of the traditional piccolo repertoire (i.e. Vivaldi concerto).

  • Works requiring accompaniment must be performed with the accompaniment. Fully unaccompanied programs are acceptable as long as they meet the other criteria listed.

Bonus:

The CFC is proud to provide a $100 stipend to each of the 4 finalists to use toward their final round recording expenses.

Awards

  • 1st Prize – $1,000.00

  • 2nd Prize – $500.00

  • 3rd Prize – $250.00

  • 4th Prize – $100.00
