 Jasmine Choi

The Chicago Flute Club will present Jasmine Choi in recital at 2:00 on Sunday afternoon, March 16, at Lutkin Hall, Northwestern University, 700 University Place, Evanston. Admission is FREE.  The event is sponsored by the Chicago Flute Club, the Flute Studio at Northwestern University, and Straubinger Flutes, Inc.

Born in Seoul and raised in a musical family in Daejon, South Korea, Ms. Choi began her studies on the violin and piano at an early age. She began playing the flute at the age of nine, and one year later gave her first public performance with the Chongju Chamber Orchestra in Haydn’s Concerto in D Major. She began her professional solo career in Korea when she was 14.

At 16, Ms. Choi came to the United States to attend the Curtis Institute of Music. She studied with Julius Baker for four years. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Curtis and a Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School, where she studied with Jeffrey Khaner. Later she studied with Thomas Robertello. Choi was the winner of the Philadelphia Orchestra’s Greenfield Competition, Yamaha Young Performing Artists, Astral Artists, and the Concerto Competition at Juilliard, which presented her as a soloist under conductor James DePreist for the opening concert of its 100th-anniversary season.

Ms. Choi’s Chicago program will include works by Telemann, Kuhlau, Arnold, Fauré, Doppler, and Borne. She performs on a 14K gold flute by David Straubinger, and Mr. Straubinger has graciously offered to sponsor the concert. Remember, you can test-play Straubinger Flutes at the concert if you come early.
